We are excited to announce our club’s results and share some photos from last weekend’s Southeast Kendo Championship Taikai and Shinsa! Thank you to Georgia Kendo Club for hosting a great event!

Taikai:
Richard Fueston won 1st place in the Mudansha Division
Lisa Zhang won 3rd place in the Women’s Division
Ryoko Barr sensei won 2nd place in the Senior Division

Shinsa:
All of our members that tested were able to pass their tests, but we’d like to say a special congratulations to John Adams for passing his 4th Dan exam! This is a great accomplishment, and we are all proud or you!

New Beginners Session Starts March 4, 2023

The next session for Beginners 1 classes starts on March 4, 2023 – Saturday.

Atlanta Kendo Kai has decided to start the new beginner session. However, we have instituted safety precautions that all participants must agree to follow.

For those who are planning to join please do the following:

1. Register online here.
2. On the day of the class, print, sign, and bring the Liability Release Form.
3. If you chose to pay with a check in the online registration, please bring a check made out to “Atlanta Kendo Kai” for the $80 fee (plus $30 if you opted for a shinai) for the 8-week beginners’ session.
4. If you did not opt for a shinai in the registration or if you need a youth size shinai, order and bring a shinai. Make sure to order your shinai early so it arrives on time for the first practice. (Recommended online Kendo shops)
5. Come wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothes suitable for exercising.
6. Class starts promptly at 9:00 am. Please arrive 15 minutes early so we can get your paperwork processed.

Please note the following precautionary measures:

  • Masks are recommended for practice.
  • If you’re not feeling well, have a cough or slight fever, please stay home that week.

30th Annual SEUSKF Taikai and Shinsa

Atlanta, Georgia – October 5th and 6th, 2019

The SEUSKF and Atlanta Kendo Kai are proud to announce the 30th Annual SEUSKF Championship Taikai and Shinsa. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the SEUSKF Championship as well as the 10th anniversary of Atlanta Kendo Kai.  To celebrate these events, we cordially invite you to join us on the weekend of October 5th and 6th, 2019.  Proceeds from the taikai will be donated to the SEUSKF teams participating in the 2020 National Championships.  This information packet will provide you with all tournament and testing information, including all necessary registration forms. 

We hope that you will be able to attend and we are looking forward to seeing all of our kendo friends and family soon.  Thank you.

I. TOURNAMENT INFORMATION

DATE:             Saturday, October 5th, 2019

VENUE:          South Forsyth High School Gym 585 Peachtree Pkwy, Cumming, GA 30041

TIME:              7:00 AM           Doors Open/Check-in

7:45 AM           Opening Ceremony (including Iaido Demonstration by Harry Dach Sensei, Iaido 5-Dan)

8:30 AM           Start of Tournament

7:30 PM           Banquet

DIVISIONS:    Individual Divisions*

  • Youth A (11 and under)
  • Youth B (12 to 15)
  • Youth C (16 to 18)
  • Mudansha (no rank – 1 kyu, 18 and over)
  • 1 dan – 2 dan
  • 3 dan – 4 dan
  • 5 dan and above
  • Women (any rank, 18 and over)
  • Senior (any rank, 50 and over)

*Participants can compete in up to two individual divisions.

Team Divisions*

  • Youth team (3 person team, 18 and under)
  • Mudansha team (3 person team, 18 and over)
  • Adult team (5 person team, 18 and over and may include both mudansha and yudansha)

*May compete in a maximum of two team divisions. Competitors without a team may be assigned on the day of the event.

FEES:             Adult Entry Fee (Over 18)………….………………………………….$35

                      Bento Lunch* (includes drink)..……………………………………….$10

*Free lunch will be provided to shinpan 3rd (dan and above)

Over Memorial Day weekend we had several members competing, testing and attending the seminar at the GKA annual taikai. Thank you to GKA for hosting a great event! It was wonderful to see kendo friends from around the southeast and we all learned a lot from the visiting sensei in the fantastic seminar. Here are the results for Atlanta Kendo Kai.

Tournament:
Ryoko Barr sensei won 1st place in the women’s division.
Richard Fueston in won 1st place in the mudansha division.
Lisa Wiest won kanto-sho in the women’s division.

Testing:
Lisa Wiest passed 1st Kyu.
Sakura Toriyama passed 2nd kyu.
Richard Fueston passed 2nd kyu.
DeVon Williams passed 3rd kyu.
Haruhiko Shidara passed 5th kyu.

2017 AUSKF National Kendo Championships

Our members Pavel Litterbach, Victor Koh and Gulam Dasthagir were selected to be part of the South Eastern United States Kendo Federation team that took part in the All United States Kendo Federation National Championships in San Jose, California last weekend. Gulam was part of the mudansha team which won third place in the event. Congratulations to our members and to all of the SEUSKF representatives. We are proud of you all!
